Chapter 42: The End

This draft of The Studhorse Man has quite a different ending: Hazard is not killed in the final battle; Demeter instead refers to his later death in passing. Martha's sexual hedonism here becomes monogamy in the final text, and her actions are cast in a much different light—Demeter is far more contemptuous of her behaviour, as well as her daughter, D. Lepage.
