Moonstone Advertisement

Meanwhile, across the ocean in England, The Moonstone was also being published in Charles Dickens’ All The Year Round. A much different style of publication, we can already clearly see how this will shape the story before it has even come to print. This image, from the issue directly preceding the publication of The Moonstone shows an advertisement for it. This advertisement contains no images, nor even a description of what the story might be about. This shows that the people of England already have an established sense of identity and are not as concerned about the possibilities of their future that could be represented by this book or the story. Unfortunately, this stylistic difference also robs them of some of the mystery of this story without the focus on its supernatural beginnings. The story itself is not written in any different way, but without these images, it is easy to breeze through this prologue to get to the actual story.
