Antidote Advertisements
Both advertisements are about curing an ailment and helping with pains. The first advertisement is called “Every Violation” and is to tame upset stomachs, and pains. The advertisement states, “When the head throbs, the lips become parched, and the cheek is burning – the warning is given” (Harper’s Weekly 399), which is similar to the start of the encounter between Rachel and Mr. Franklin. For instance, Mr. Franklin observes that “the sound of [his] voice brought the life back to [Rachel’s] limbs and the color to her face” (Collins 338) and as Rachel “… came nearer and nearer to [him]; the warm dusky colour flush[ed] on her cheeks” (338). Therefore, Rachel is quite upset and needs soothing, which can only be achieved through reconciliation with Mr. Franklin. The next advertisement is “Parents Prize Pain Paint” which is an advertisement for pain paint. This pain paint seems to be able to improve pain and is supposed to be superior to taking pills. Also, the title has the name ‘parents’ in it, which is associating the product to kinship ties. Interestingly, the kinship ties relate back to the first page of Harper’s Weekly and the image “Maternal Vigilance In The Face Of The Enemy” (384). Overall, it seems the start and end of Harper’s Weekly creating a cyclical connection.
