Subliminal Advertisement
At first, All The Year Round seems to not have any advertising, which is odd as advertisement can bring an economic benefit. However, All The Year Round does have subliminal advertising on the first page (478). It is advertising Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, and Wilkie Collins. Thus, strategically the advertisement is not made to sell things and objects but is promoting all three authors. Furthermore, there are commercial benefits of having all three men on the first page just like how “Collins enjoyed a relationship of strategic commercial advantage” (Leighton and Surridge 208) by selling The Moonstone to be published in America and England. Hence, if the reader recognizes and admires one of the authors they will be inclined to read the other works written by the other authors because it looks like three men are supporting each other. Likewise in The Moonstone Mr. Franklin Blake says to Rachel, “you have tried by yourself, [but] you have not tried with me to help you” (Collins 342). Thus, by forming an alliance Rachel and Mr. Franklin can have a better understanding of discovering the truth about the diamond. Consequently, this is showing the advantage of people uniting together, whether that is for economic benefits or for obtaining additional knowledge.
