Advertisements in Harper's Weekly

Harper’s Weekly contains many advertisements, several of which are about other countries. This includes advertisements for books about the history of the Netherlands, as well as a book about the history of the Huguenots. Another advertisement not pictured was advertising imported chocolates from Paris.

Unlike the article “Amidst the Ice Again”, these advertisements are not exploration oriented. However, they still focus on countries outside of the USA, and the advertisement about imported chocolates from Paris highlights the benefits of exploration. After all, France does not grow their own cocoa, so they would have to get it through exploration and importing. The Moonstone, like cocoa, is a luxury that was obtained through exploration.

These advertisements reflect a fascination with countries outside of the USA. While not exactly exotic in nature, it echoes the sentiment in “Amidst the Ice Again” in regards to a fascination with the whole world and different countries. Advertisements like these would cause the reader to view exploration in a favorable light, which would add to the sensationalism of The Moonstone.
