All The Year Round - "The English Gentleman's Own Profession"

“Among Russian Peasantry” is followed by another piece seemingly intended for upper-class English audiences, entitled "The English Gentleman's Own Profession". This piece offers a view on the process of debunking the myth that English nobility should only enter military service and not any other profession. Though condemning English junior officers—taken from the gentry—on actions taken in India and in England, they still remain “our junior officers”. These figures are “held up before our eyes as patterns of what gentlemen should be”, with the implication that these officers are meant to serve as an example to other upper-class men. This writing aimed at an upper-class male audience may once again have served to lessen an audience’s opinion of Miss Clack, a middle-class female spinster.
