Billie's Moonstone Project
Wilkie Collins exquisite novel The Moonstone (1868) was published serially in both All The Year Round and Harper’s Weekly. Being published simultaneously in both the U.S. and the U.K. meant that Collins work was able to reach a board audience all at once. With Harper’s Weekly being published with many illustrations and ads through the magazine it is easy to believe that they were meant to influence the reader. All The Year Round however, was published just text and without any advertisements or illustrations based off of each installment that was published. The illustrations heightened the intensity of the plot of The Moonstone. This is seen in the difference between the publication of Harper’s Weekly that has photos and advertisements compared to All The Year Round which lacks any sort of illustration or advertisement that would be similar to Harper’s Weekly. Both influence the audience in their own ways with the content that has been published.
